Abstract

The availability of abundant mineral resources make Indonesia as a country that is potentially significant in the development and processing of minerals. Indonesia has abundant raw materials such as iron ore and other support material. But the limitations of the application of technology led to Indonesia's dependence on imported sponge iron and pig iron (pig iron) as raw material for the metal industry is still high. Lampung Province is one of the provinces in Indonesia which has the potential of local iron ore reserves are profitable and are eligible to be processed. The process of reduction of iron ore pellets in a rotary kiln and shaft furnace has done fairly satisfactory. In the research that has been conducted in 2011 produced sponge iron with metallization reaching 96% in the shaft furnace. Efforts to increase the degree of metallization of iron ore pellets to min. 90% in the reduction process in the rotary kiln with a continuous process has been carried out in 2012. Operating variables very important to known and observed (in order to obtain the desired quality of sponge iron) which is consist of iron ore pellet feed composition, the size of the bait, feed flow rate, profile operating temperature, speed of the rotary kiln, slope angle of rotary kiln, retention time, flow rate and inlet air temperature for the burner and the composition of the sponge iron. The process of reduction of iron ore pellets carried out at a temperature of 950 - 1200°C in a rotary kiln using pulverized burner modified UPT. Balai Pengolahan Mineral Lampung LIPI (UPT. BPML - LIPI), which has been patented and established as one of the outcomes Innovator in 2010 fueled local coal and other sources of energy based on biomass. Quality of sponge iron targeted which are have high levels of metal Fe ≥ 80% and ≥ 90% metallization degree. In this study, the best results are obtained sponge iron has a metal content of 62.62% Fe and 95.31% metallization degree.
